Asia Pacific Evidence-Based
Medicine & Nursing
Workshop and Conference
27 to 30 April 2027
The Asia Pacific Evidence-Based Medicine and Nursing (APEBMN) Workshop & Conference has grown into a leading regional platform for training and capacity-building in evidence-based healthcare over more than two decades.
The inaugural Asia Pacific Evidence-Based Medicine (APEBM) Workshop & Conference took place from 22 to 25 January 2003 at the Clinical Research Centre, Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore, under the chairmanship of Professor Lim Seng Gee. From the outset, the organisers defined three core objectives: to teach the principles of evidence-based medicine (EBM), to develop practical skills for applying EBM in clinical practice, and to cultivate the ability to teach EBM to others.
In its early years, the workshop built a strong reputation through learner-centred pedagogy that integrated interactive small-group teaching with high-quality plenary lectures. Following the 5th APEBM in 2007, leadership transitioned, with Professor Shirley Ooi taking on the chairing role from 2008. In 2011, Professor Shirley Ooi and Assistant Professor Irwani Ibrahim assumed co-chair roles, driving a phase of expansion and consolidation.
In 2010, during the 8th workshop in Penang, Malaysia, the organisers expanded the conference to include nursing, renaming it the Asia Pacific Evidence-Based Medicine and Nursing (APEBMN). This shift reflected a growing emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and the integration of evidence-based practice across healthcare professions.
Over time, APEBMN has attracted a diverse international faculty and participants from across the Asia-Pacific region. The programme has featured globally recognised leaders in EBM, including Professor Gordon Guyatt, alongside expert faculty from Australia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, and the Philippines. These contributors have strengthened the conference’s academic rigor and international standing.
The organisers have continuously refined the programme to address varying levels of expertise, from foundational EBM training to advanced critical appraisal, while also offering dedicated tracks for educators and nursing professionals. The curriculum consistently emphasises the five core domains of EBM: therapy, systematic reviews, diagnosis, harm, and prognosis, and incorporates emerging methodologies such as network meta-analysis and non-inferiority trials.
The conference has demonstrated resilience and adaptability. The organisers cancelled the planned 18th APEBMN in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and successfully resumed the series in 2024. By 2026, the 20th APEBMN Workshop & Conference, held at the National University Hospital in Singapore, stands as a testament to nearly two decades of sustained commitment to advancing evidence-based practice in the region. With continued participation from internationally renowned experts and a strong emphasis on teaching excellence, APEBMN remains one of the premier EBM training platforms in the Asia-Pacific.
